8 Tips to Choose and Organize Your Changing Table for Maximum Efficiency and Comfort

At the latest in the final weeks of pregnancy, many expectant mothers experience it: the nesting instinct. With lots of love, you prepare for your baby's arrival, beautify your home, and turn it into a safe, cozy place for your newest family member.

The changing table or changing unit: it’s the place where you and your baby will spend a lot of time together and share intimate moments. It should be not only comfortable, but also practical and safe. In this article, we share eight tips for setting up and organizing your changing table so it meets all your needs.

Conseil n° 1 : trouvez le bon endroit pour changer les couches

Even before you begin to buy a changing table , it’s important to find the perfect spot. Choose a place where you feel comfortable and where there’s enough space. Ideally, the changing table should also be accessible from both sides, in case you and your partner want to change the baby together. In general, your child’s room, your bedroom, and the bathroom are suitable locations. The bathroom has the advantage of usually having a pleasant temperature—more on that in tip number 4. When choosing the right place, also make sure the changing table is protected from direct sunlight and drafts. Depending on your space and preferences, it doesn’t have to be a large changing table: a simple folding table or a sturdy add-on for an existing dresser may be exactly what you need.

Conseil n° 2 : évitez les dangers inutiles

As soon as you’ve found a suitable spot to change your baby, check again that there are no shelves or picture frames improperly mounted above your changing table. Outlets should also not be located in the immediate vicinity. Your baby’s safety comes first, and anything that could be a potential source of danger should be stored as far away as possible from the changing table. The table itself must also be secure. When purchasing, make sure it offers uncompromising stability and features higher, rounded edges on the sides. This helps prevent injuries and reduces the risk of falls.

Conseil n° 3 : lors de l’achat, faites attention à la hauteur de la table à langer

The height of the changing table is another important criterion. Your baby won’t always stay as small and light as at birth. As your little one grows and develops, they gain weight, which requires more strength from you during diaper changes. To help prevent back pain, keep an upright posture. For this reason, it’s best to choose a changing table at a comfortable height. If your partner is taller or shorter than you, an adjustable-height model could be a great solution.

Conseil n° 4 : assurez une température agréable et un éclairage adéquat

A comfortable temperature helps both you and your baby feel at ease during diaper changes. Did you know your little adventurer’s skin is much thinner than yours? That means it cools down faster than you might think; the ideal room temperature is between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. To warm the area quickly, it can be helpful to use a heat lamp. Different models are available: some are wall-mounted, while others can be placed directly above the changing table. Sissi, our midwife from LILLYDOO, recommends using a heat lamp even in summer if temperatures aren’t particularly warm. This way, you can let your baby wiggle around naked for a few minutes without the risk of getting cold. When using a heat lamp, be sure to follow the specified safety distances. Some especially practical models switch off automatically after a few minutes, giving you one less thing to think about. ;)

When it comes to lighting, it’s important to find the right balance: not too bright, not too dazzling, but bright enough to properly clean your baby’s bottom. A string of lights can be an excellent option for nighttime diaper changes. With the right brightness, it creates a gentle glow that won’t wake you or your baby with harsh light.

Conseil n° 5 : mettez votre bébé à l’aise sur le bon matelas à langer

Another must-have for the changing table is a matching changing pad. It should be soft and naturally gentle on the skin. Removable, washable covers can be especially practical. It’s often recommended to choose a pad that’s as non-slip as possible. As your baby’s desire to move increases, you’ll appreciate this feature more and more.

Conseil n° 6 : ayez l’essentiel à porter de main

Now it’s time to set up the changing table. Depending on the model, you’ll have different storage options that should be organized thoughtfully. Keep the items you use most often within easy reach, such as diapers and wipes. This saves time and supports your baby’s safety. If you use one hand to grab a wipe, you can keep your little adventurer safely in place with the other. ;) Cute baskets that attach to the side panels of the changing table are especially practical. You can store everything you need there, such as spare clothes or other care items, like sweet almond oil.

Conseil n° 7 : distrayez votre petit aventurier

Once the changing table is set up, you can personalize it. With a pretty mobile and a few toys within reach, you can make this time more enjoyable. Not only do they look lovely, but they also give your little adventurer something interesting to focus on. Diaper changes are always a small adventure, and when your baby is less eager to be changed, distraction is often the best remedy. A colorful mobile, their favorite stuffed animal, and small rituals like songs and nursery rhymes can help make this moment more pleasant.

Conseil n° 8 : économisez et protégez l’environnement

Getting everything ready for a baby can become expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to save money, you can buy a second-hand changing table or ask around within your circle of friends. You may know parents who no longer need theirs and would be happy to pass it on to you—which is even better for the environment.

If you’re creative and handy, you can also build your own changing table and tailor it to your individual storage preferences. There are also adjustable pieces of furniture that can be converted as your baby grows. For example, some models can be transformed into a shelf or a desk once you no longer need them as a changing table, so they can accompany your little adventurer for even longer.
