Let's be honest: Official appointments after the birth can be annoying, but they’re unfortunately necessary—just like applying for the birth certificate. When do you need to apply for the birth certificate?

After the birth, you have seven days to apply for your baby's birth certificate. If you miss this deadline, you may face a coercive fine . But why is the deadline so short? Quite simply: Without the birth certificate, further important official procedures—such as applying for Child benefit and Parental allowance —as well as registering your baby with health insurance and the issuance of identification documents are not possible.

The birth certificate provides information about your child's first and last names, biological gender, date of birth, place of birth, and legal representatives . Don't panic if you haven't yet found the perfect first name for your little explorer after the birth—you have four weeks to submit the name and will receive a response by then. Where can you get a birth certificate?

You will receive a total of four copies of the birth certificate from the local registry office —either by mail or for pickup. However, there are different ways to apply for the birth certificate. Often, the hospital handles the application. Since you are already bringing all the necessary documents for the birth announcement, this is the most convenient option.

If you give birth at home or in a birth house , you or a parent with custody must submit the application at the registry office on-site . In many cities, however, you can now apply for a birth certificate online . Find out as early as possible during pregnancy about the procedure in your town—after the birth, your head will probably be full of other things. :)

  • Birth certificates of the legal guardians (If you are a single parent, your birth certificate is sufficient.)

  • Identity cards or passports of the guardians

  • Marriage certificate, if you and your partner are married.

  • Declaration of paternity acknowledgment and, if applicable, the custody declaration, if you are not married.

How long does it take to issue the birth certificate?

Usually, you will receive the birth certificate after approximately seven to 14 days . If it takes longer, it’s worth checking with the registry office. The certificate is often already ready for pickup and just hasn’t been sent yet.

How much does a birth certificate cost?

The fees for issuing the birth certificate vary from city to city. The costs are usually between €10 and €15 . Each additional copy costs between 5 and 8 euros. And even if you have lost the birth certificate —whether it was you or your little explorer—you don’t need to worry: the responsible registry office can easily issue a new one.

The bureaucracy after the birth may be a bit annoying, but as you can see, most official procedures are not too complicated. Once everything is taken care of, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the early days with your baby.
