Even though it can sometimes be tricky to navigate the jungle of sizes—and you may have bought diapers that are too big or that leak at least once—the following four points will help you find the perfect diaper size for your child. We invite you to discover the different diaper sizes available and the criteria to consider when making your purchase.
What are the different diaper sizes?
Most children wear diapers from birth to early childhood. That’s why diaper sizes range from 1 to 7 and are designed to meet different needs depending on age. Your child's weight is one of the main criteria to consider when choosing the right diaper size. Size 1 corresponds to newborn diapers for babies weighing at least two kilograms. The sizes then range up to size 7, which is suitable for older children weighing up to 30 kg. If these are not sufficient, be aware that there are pull-up diapers that can be worn like shorts. Many diaper manufacturers use their own size scales, sometimes even with intermediate sizes that have higher absorption capacity (an intermediate size is sometimes indicated as follows: 4+).
They are available in sizes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. To find the corresponding weights for each size, please refer to the diaper size chart.
| Taille | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poids de votre bébé (kg) | 2-5 kg | 4-8 kg | 6-10 kg | 9-14 kg | 11-16 kg | 13-18 kg | 15+ kg | 17+ kg |
Which are the truly suitable layers?
It can happen that diapers don’t fit well even though they match your child's weight. This is because children, like adults, can have very different body shapes regardless of their weight. The ideal diaper should not leave marks on the skin, but it shouldn’t be too loose either. A diaper should allow your baby to move freely without leaking. Babies grow in rapid spurts; therefore, it’s wise to keep a pack of the next size in reserve. After birth, you generally need size 1 diapers. This then allows you to try size 2 diapers before purchasing a full pack.
How to tell if it's time to change diaper sizes?
Several signs can indicate when it’s time to switch to a larger diaper size. For example, if the diapers are difficult to fasten and press against your little adventurer's belly, they’ve become too small. To check whether the diapers fit well, make sure you can easily slide two fingers between the diaper and your baby’s skin at the waist. If the diaper fits snugly around the body without being too tight, the diaper size is correct. The diapers should also not compress your baby’s little legs. Has the diaper leaked several times? Then try the next larger size to see if that solves the problem. Larger diapers—or simply the next intermediate size—offer better absorption, which can be especially helpful at night when your baby wears them longer.
Just try it simply
Your baby may be slim or, on the contrary, quite robust. In that case, the diaper sizes that correspond to their weight may not be suitable at all. Maybe you’ve already found the perfect diapers in exactly the right size—and yet they stop fitting overnight because your baby has had a growth spurt. Try not to worry too much about this and simply test our different diaper options.
Very practical, the allows you to have diapers and training pants in sizes 1 to 7 delivered directly to your home. If your little adventurer grows faster than expected, you can simply return unopened packages of diapers and postpone your next delivery with the new size.
