When you find out that you’re expecting a baby, it probably won’t take long before it becomes hard to keep your excitement to yourself.
Then it’s time to share the wonderful news with the people you love. Announcing your pregnancy is a very special, emotional moment for you and for your loved ones, and there are many different ways to surprise them.
We’ve collected the most beautiful and heartfelt ways to share your pregnancy with friends and family.
When is the right moment to announce your pregnancy to friends and family?
It’s often said that you should wait until the end of the first trimester to announce your pregnancy. Ultimately, though, the right moment is whenever you feel ready. Some pregnant women prefer to wait until around the 12th week of pregnancy, once they’ve received confirmation that their baby is developing well. Others, on the other hand, want to share the news right away, as soon as they hold the test in their hands. That way, they avoid the stress of keeping the pregnancy—and its early signs—a secret, and when someone offers a glass of wine, they don’t have to come up with excuses. ;)
So it’s best to listen to your gut feeling. You can start by sharing your pregnancy with your closest circle and then gradually tell everyone else you’d like to involve.
And at work?
As an employee, you are not legally required to inform your employer of your pregnancy; you only need to notify them of your parental leave at least two months before it begins. Nevertheless, it is advisable to share your pregnancy with your employer, as only then does the Maternity Protection Act, which regulates certain protective provisions during pregnancy, come into effect. The Maternity Protection Act grants you, for example, protection against dismissal, protective periods around the birth, special arrangements such as breaks at the workplace, and the right to medical appointments during working hours. By announcing your pregnancy in a timely manner, you also enable your employer to find a temporary replacement for you early on.
How do you surprise your partner with the pregnancy?
The first person you share the exciting news with is usually your partner. Even if you’ve consciously planned for a baby, you can still think of something special to tell her/him that you’re expecting. You’ll find some of the most beautiful options here.
The baby bodysuit
Give your partner a tiny printed baby bodysuit with the inscription "Hello Mom/Hello Dad". It’s incredible to think that your child will be wearing it soon.
The pregnancy test
No question: a positive pregnancy test says more than a thousand words. Give your partner the test as a gift in a special moment—or simply place it next to their plate and wait for it to click.
Held forever
Ask someone from your circle of friends or family to take a photo of the two of you. Just before they snap it, announce, "I'm pregnant"—and your partner’s unforgettable reaction will be captured forever. If you want to keep the news between the two of you for now, a selfie works just as well.
How do you announce the pregnancy to the future grandparents?
With the arrival of a new family member, not only does your daily life change, but probably also the lives of the future grandparents. We’ve gathered some ideas to let them know in a fun and creative way that they’ll soon become grandma or grandpa.
The fortune cookie
Probably the tastiest way to tell your parents you’re expecting a baby: offer them a personalized fortune cookie with a personal message during your next coffee visit. Then it’s time to wait eagerly for their reaction!
The Baby Letter
Write a letter to the future grandparents from the perspective of their grandchild, introducing yourself and announcing your birth. Place the card together with an ultrasound picture in an envelope and give it to your parents. They’ll surely never want to part with this special letter!
The photo album
Were you just on vacation? Great—invite your parents to look at the vacation photos together. As the last picture, add an ultrasound image as a surprise to announce your pregnancy. If you want, include a note like "Our greatest journey is still ahead of us."
With the help of the older siblings
If you already have one or more children, they’ll surely be happy to help as your little accomplices, holding a sign that reveals the news: "I'm going to be a big sister/big brother."
So tell the whole family that you are expecting a baby
The scratch card for the birth
The element of surprise is guaranteed when you share your pregnancy news with a scratch card. Personalized scratch cards are available for the whole family: future grandparents, aunt, uncle, and many more. Bet they’ll be much more excited about that than a million-dollar win?
The Surprise Egg
If DIY is exactly your thing, you’ll find countless creative ideas online for sharing the good news with friends and family. One idea is an emptied egg that serves as the messenger. To do this, poke small holes in both ends of the egg with a needle to blow it out. After you’ve emptied the egg, clean it and let it dry. Then insert a rolled-up note with your message into the opening, paint or decorate the egg as you like, and hand over the surprise.
T-Shirt with message
With a T-shirt bearing a clear message like „Super Mama“ or „I'm going to be a dad“, the news won’t go unnoticed at the next family dinner. ;)
Original ideas to share the news with your girlfriends/boyfriends
With the wine label
How about a dinner invitation to announce your pregnancy to your girlfriends/your friends? Serve a very special wine with a label you’ve personalized beforehand with a message. See who spots it first!
Pizza Party
If a relaxed pizza night suits you better than a formal dinner, write the message on the inside wall of a pizza box the next time you invite your friends. Alternatively, you can also glue in an ultrasound image.
Music, baby!
Create a very special playlist for your next evening with girlfriends/boys. What do the songs have in common? The word "Baby" appears in all of them—and the selection is huge!
If you prefer to keep it simple and without much fuss, a grand gesture isn’t necessary to share your pregnancy with friends and family. A simple "I'm pregnant" is enough, and the joy will surely be just as great. No matter how you announce your pregnancy, we hope the moment with your loved ones becomes a very special one that you’ll all remember for a long time.
