5 Tips for Winter with a Baby

How to Keep Your Little Explorer Safe and Warm in Cold Weather

A walk in the fresh air is healthy and fun—in winter just as much as in summer. But when temperatures drop, the delicate, sensitive skin of your little explorer needs special protection. Our tips will tell you what to pay special attention to during the cold season.

1. Fatty Cream

In winter, your baby needs a moisturizer with a high fat content to help maintain the skin's natural acid mantle. Make sure the cream contains no perfumes or additives, so you are truly doing something good for the skin and not burdening it with harmful ingredients. Use only as much cream as your child's skin can comfortably absorb. It's better to apply it more frequently and use only a small amount each time.

2. Avoid frequent bathing

Splashing in the water is great fun for most babies—however, you should largely avoid it in winter, as the skin cools down quite quickly afterward. Therefore, it's best to bathe your little explorer in the evening so they can snuggle into a warm bed afterward. One bath per week is sufficient, as frequent and prolonged bathing can further dry out a baby's skin.

3. The Onion Look

To keep your baby warm during winter, it is recommended to dress them in layers, as the air between them acts as insulation. Make sure to use high-quality materials such as (Merino) wool and silk. These are great because they adapt to body temperature and retain warmth, making them better suited than cotton or polyester, which tend to have a cooling effect.

4. Equip strollers

For winter walks, you should adjust your stroller to the cold temperatures: Use a waterproof down or sheepskin bag that ideally retains heat and keeps your baby warm even during long walks. If you prefer not to use sheepskin or down, you can alternatively opt for footmuffs made of pure wool or warm fleece. Additionally, you can place a hot water bottle inside before the outing to warm up the stroller more quickly. However, you should remove it before placing your baby inside to prevent burns.

5. Carry baby on the body

On especially cold days, you should avoid carrying your baby in the stroller and instead use a carrier close to your body so they are warmed by you and your winter clothing. Carry your little explorer in a way that their face rests against your body, allowing them to breathe in your warm air.
