The first year is behind you, and your little adventurer is slowly but surely transitioning from infant to toddler. An exciting new period awaits you! Certainly as tiring as the previous one, but just as full of discoveries. In this article, we reveal 8 things about daily life with a young child that no one talks about!
1. The playground becomes your second home
Toddlers have boundless energy, and the children's playground is ideal for helping them burn it off and practice a sports activity . Over time, though, you realize it becomes your second home because you spend so much time there! Little ones never get tired of it; they can spend hours digging in the sandbox, swinging, sliding, and more. The positive aspect? This is where you’ll likely build many friendships with other parents in the months and years to come.
2. Goodbye to trendy decoration
Before your baby’s arrival, you probably spent hours setting up your little nest. The ultra-trendy white sofa and matching rug are, after all, the pride of many parents. But as soon as your little adventurer becomes mobile and starts exploring their environment on their own, you begin to bury all your decorating and organizing dreams. Anything fragile and potentially within reach of curious little fingers must be stored away for safety reasons. The baby’s room is not the only place flooded with toys. Your beloved white sofa will turn into a hideout—watch out for stains left by chocolate-covered little hands. And let’s not forget that the living room also becomes a play area. ;)
3. The truth always comes from the mouths of children
When little ones start to speak and express their thoughts, it’s best to keep a sense of humor and sometimes even a touch of nonchalance. Because without a filter, they say everything that comes to mind, which can sometimes put you in embarrassing situations. Like when your child asks you at the supermarket checkout why the person in front of you has a big belly, or when they tell the daycare about your last visit to the bathroom. Of course, there’s plenty to laugh about—especially since all parents experience at least one of these situations. Keep a record of these anecdotes, because it’s only a matter of time! The tide will turn during adolescence, when your teen will be embarrassed by everything you tell them. ;)
4. Hello the "no" phase and the terrible two
The time when your little adventurer would get dressed without protest in the cute outfit you chose is now a thing of the past! Your toddler is entering a period of self-assertion: their personality is developing, and they want to make it known. Whether it’s putting on a jacket, going to bed, or brushing their teeth, everything is up for discussion. Your little one constantly tests your limits. Add to this the tantrums when they can’t do something the way they want. This is the two-year-old crisis, also known as the "terrible two". Even if your child challenges you now, this rebellious phase is completely normal; it’s even extremely important for your child's development, self-assertion, and independence. Find all our tips to get through this phase in our article "". The terrible two: understanding and managing the two-year-old crisis ». Hang in there!
2. The discovery of co-sleeping
If you’re already a fan of co-sleeping, then this point probably isn’t new to you. However, if until now your little one has been sleeping in their own bed, you’ll definitely need to get used to this new guest in your marital bed. So, while it previously held a duvet and two pillows, it now includes an entire arsenal of pillows, a few stuffed animals, and even toys. The positive point? Wake-up cuddles are now part of this new setup.
5. Holidays: change of plan
If, before your baby’s birth, your holidays looked like impromptu city trips at the last minute, hikes in exotic countries, or romantic wellness stays, your plans are likely to change. Now, they look more like organized family vacations along our French coasts, in our lovely countryside, and in the mountains. Not only is it more difficult to take a spontaneous trip with a young child, but everything requires hours of preparation. Then there’s the luggage: goodbye to the carry-on suitcase, hello to 3–4 pieces of luggage and the essentials for your baby. The schedule is different, too; lie-ins become rarer, and your child demands constant attention. Nevertheless, you wouldn’t trade your family holidays for anything—there are so many memories to be made. To learn more about organizing holidays with a baby, take a look at our article « ».
7. Your new workout program? Your child!
You may be in the same situation as many parents, with less time to dedicate to your workout sessions. So, good news! As soon as your little one becomes more and more mobile, so do you. Your daily activities now include chasing games, carrying your child, and tidying up the many toys scattered everywhere. ;)
8. You miss your baby
Every day, your little adventurer learns new things, asserts themselves, and becomes more independent—it’s certain: they are no longer a baby, and there’s no going back. Difficult moments are soon forgotten, and nostalgia gradually takes hold. You miss memories like the incomparable smell of newborns and their constant need to be close to you—and that’s normal. In these moments, you might even think about having another child to relive those sweet days. And then your little one appears, smiling, and that desire is already forgotten—at least until your next nostalgic episode! ;)
Everyday life with a little one always brings surprises and new challenges. At the same time, it’s wonderful to be able to witness your child's development every day. If, at the end of a particularly exhausting day, you start to doubt yourself, never forget that you are doing a good job, that you are a good parent, and that you can be proud of yourself! Just look at your little adventurer to be convinced!
