Tips for beautiful children's photos and a unique baby shoot

How to Nail a Smartphone Photoshoot: Tips for Stunning Results

With your baby and toddler, you experience exciting moments every day that you want to capture and preserve. You don’t necessarily need a bulky professional camera for this; most smartphone cameras are impressively capable. Even better, your phone is usually close at hand—perfect for capturing spontaneous moments with your little explorer. In this article, our LILLYDOO photographer Sven shares his best tips for photographing children and explains what to keep in mind when taking photos with your smartphone, as well as how to succeed in baby photography.

1. Take photos in good light

The most important tip for successful photos is simple: make sure you have enough light. Photograph your little explorer during the day and toward the light source—meaning with the light behind the camera. Too little light, on the other hand, can quickly make images look blurry. When it comes to lighting conditions, our LILLYDOO photographer Sven recommends:

5 Tips for beautiful children's photos
  • Natural light always looks softer and more flattering in color. So don’t hesitate to turn off your phone’s built-in flash when the lighting is good.

  • Pay attention to diffuse light : When you’re outside with your toddler, a lightly cloudy sky offers the best conditions for a great portrait. Harsh sunlight creates unflattering shadows on the face. If there are no clouds in the sky, a shady spot is the perfect place for a beautiful picture.

2. Make small technical adjustments

One of the best things about photographing with a smartphone is how easy it is to use—no complicated settings are needed for a beautiful result. Sven mainly relies on three settings for great pictures:

  • HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and simply means that, in difficult lighting conditions (for example, backlighting), three images with different exposures are taken and then combined. This reduces overexposure and prevents overly harsh contrasts. In backlit situations, this setting is definitely helpful.

  • Newer phones offer Live Image Mode . Especially with active babies and toddlers who rarely stay still, this setting is invaluable: Live mode records a short video that you can easily edit in your “Photos” gallery. There, you can extract individual frames from the clip, edit them, and save them as separate pictures.

  • Pay attention to Focus and Exposure : Most smartphone cameras automatically focus on the center of the photo. If your little explorer is elsewhere in the frame and you want to focus on them, simply tap the corresponding spot on the screen. This not only sets the focus, but usually also lets you adjust the exposure by pressing and holding on the screen.

3. Be flexible with the motif

You’ve probably seen those professional baby photos where the newborn sits in a small willow basket or lies in a sea of flowers—many parents find these shots beautiful, but let’s be honest: they have very little to do with real life. :) Feel free to let go of the idea of perfection during a baby shoot and make flexibility and patience your motto for the best photos.

  • Try motifs that reflect real life: crawling and playing, visiting family, or those first chaotic attempts at eating baby food. Intimate moments, in particular, often result in beautiful and natural photos . You might get a great opportunity when your partner is daydreaming, cuddling with your little explorer in bed, and not expecting photos—snapshots are often the most beautiful.

  • And what if tears suddenly start to flow? During a baby shoot, that’s not uncommon—and it’s not a problem. Your child doesn’t have to smile in every picture; instead, it’s a chance to capture all the Emotions of your little explorer. Make their Mimic a special focus. After a few days, you might already have a whole series of photos that beautifully captures the range of expressions—from smiling to crying, yawning, and frowning. Of course, don’t overdo it: if your baby or toddler is no longer interested and would rather play, eat, or sleep, accept that and continue the shoot in a few hours or the next day.

  • Facial expressions make wonderful details, but especially with babies, tiny feet, hands, or the head are also adorable motifs. For a Close-up shot , your baby needs to stay still—so it’s perfect when they’re sleeping. Another idea for close-ups is to Play with proportions. Hold your hand or foot next to your baby’s to show just how tiny those little body parts are. A quick reminder: don’t forget to set your smartphone to silent so you don’t wake your baby with the shutter sound. It’s also best to avoid the flash—while it isn’t dangerous for your baby’s eyes, the bright light can startle or unsettle them.

4. Choose the correct perspective

Perspective gives you the opportunity to make your images exciting and dynamic. It also helps determine the story your photo tells. So, before you take the picture, consider which angle and environment will best capture your little explorer.

5 Tips for beautiful children's photos
  • Your child doesn’t always have to look directly at the camera. During play, laughter, or discovery, especially opportunities arise for documentary footage , where you take an observing perspective. It’s best to photograph your baby or toddler at eye level from a slight distance, or even from a slightly concealed position. This way, your little explorer won’t be distracted by the act of taking photos.

  • Zooming isn’t an ideal solution on many smartphones when you want the best crop, because image quality often suffers. For perfect framing , it’s better to adjust the composition by changing your own position.

  • Depth of field adds tension to your photos. The farther your baby or toddler is from the background, the more background blur you’ll get. The contrast between your little explorer in focus and the softly blurred background makes the image feel more lively than a “flat” picture with little distance to the background.

5. Use beautiful and familiar objects for the composition

Empty images can feel emotionless and a bit cold. Sven therefore recommends bringing your composition to life with a few accessories:

  • A favorite toy in your child’s hand, the lively children’s room instead of a white wall as a backdrop, or the leaves of a plant blurred in the foreground—these and other items make your photos feel more alive. It doesn’t take much effort. You’ll likely discover plenty of everyday objects that have the potential to become photo accessories.

  • Of course, the right accessories are especially helpful for baby photos. With a favorite toy or stuffed animal, your little explorer will likely feel more relaxed, and you can capture these meaningful items in the photo—who doesn’t love remembering their favorite teddy from childhood? :) A nursing pillow is also a useful tool if you want to photograph your baby lying down. On the one hand, your little explorer is familiar with the feeling, so the situation doesn’t seem unnatural; on the other hand, it adds a bit of dimension to the picture, since your baby isn’t lying flat on the ground.

6. Find the right time

You know your child best and understand their routines. Depending on the motif you want, you can plan the shoot accordingly. For example, if your little explorer is always especially tired after nursing/feeding in the afternoon, that’s the perfect moment for a sleeping candid shot. Want to capture your baby’s or toddler’s incomparable smile? That works best when they’re well-rested and exploring the world on the play mat or playing outside.

7. Choose snapshots instead of the perfect portrait

Especially with an active toddler, it can be challenging to capture the “perfect” photo exactly as you imagine it. Your little explorer certainly has a mind of their own. :) Sven’s most important tip at the end is:

5 Tips for beautiful children's photos
  • A calm portrait in a specific pose is difficult to achieve with young children, and staged photos don’t necessarily reflect your child’s personality. Instead, try capturing the moment more often in relaxed, natural situations. On dad’s shoulders, splashing in the garden, or digging in the sandbox—you’ll enjoy looking back on these everyday moments for many years to come. Even better when you have a great photo of these “perfect” moments!
