LILLYDOO and Plastic Bank against ocean pollution
Share
Stop plastic before it reaches the ocean – this best describes the mission of Plastic Bank. The organization is committed to combating ocean pollution caused by plastic and has launched an innovative initiative for this purpose. Aspects of sustainability are considered here as well as social factors. LILLYDOO is also contributing to reducing plastic in the sea in collaboration with the Plastic Bank Foundation: Our LILLYDOO green line is plastic-neutral. It is important to us to be transparent with you and to explain how we have achieved this. In this article, we therefore let Plastic Bank speak for itself: What are the goals of Plastic Bank? How does the organization work? And how does the collaboration with LILLYDOO proceed?
The mission behind Plastic Bank
How does Plastic Bank work? How do you support local communities on-site?
"Plastic Bank searches around the world for vulnerable coastal areas that currently lack infrastructure for collecting plastic. Additionally, Plastic Bank helps local entrepreneurs establish collection points at suitable locations, supports the formation of collection communities, and thereby prevents plastic from entering the ocean. For the collected plastic that is handed in at the collection points, the participating collectors receive a fair income. This in turn helps them to earn a livelihood. But beyond that, Plastic Bank also offers them further life-improving support. This includes, among other things, access to health, work, and life insurance, digital networking, and banking services."
How can consumers imagine the impact of the Plastic Bank Initiative?
"Thanks to Plastic Bank and their partners, 2.5 billion plastic bottles have already been prevented from reaching the ocean. If you're interested in more current figures, you can find all the information here: .
But not only do the positive effects on the environment drive Plastic Bank. The members of the collection community also benefit from exchanging the collected plastic for life-improving services. These include, for example, food, heating oil for cooking, health insurance, or internet access.
How does Plastic Bank decide which regions to support?
Why is recycling especially important in coastal regions?
"By collaborating with communities in coastal regions, Plastic Bank is able to establish collection points within a 50-kilometer radius of the ocean or along waterways bordering the ocean. At these locations, we have the greatest impact on reducing plastic in the sea. Because if we want to effectively rid the oceans of trash, we must first ensure that no new waste is generated – the tap must be turned off, so to speak. For this reason, Plastic Bank primarily focuses on collecting and recycling plastic in coastal areas before it even reaches the sea."
What happens to the collected plastic? How does a "plastic circular economy" work?
"The collected plastic is recycled and processed into a new raw material called SocialPlastic®. This can be purchased by manufacturers and used to produce more environmentally friendly and socially responsible products. Thus, the process concludes in a sustainable circular economy for plastic. If you want to learn more about the circular economy for recycled plastic, check out the Plastic Bank " " page."
LILLYDOO's collaboration with Plastic Bank
Marine pollution is one of the biggest problems of our time – and we at LILLYDOO are also aware of this. That is why we have decided to collaborate with Plastic Bank and do something together . We offset the entire plastic footprint of LILLYDOO green diapers, pants, and wipes. In total, we collect the full plastic content from the environment that we use for the production of our products.
The LILLYDOO green products are plastic neutral. What does that mean?
"Plastic neutrality simply describes a compensated plastic footprint. A product – or even an entire product line – can achieve plastic neutrality when the manufacturing company participates in the Plastic Bank's so-called" Plastic Collection Credits acquired. These credits must correspond to the amount of plastic used in the products and their packaging during a specific period.
If a company, for example, uses 100 tons of plastic in the packaging of 'Product A' in the year 2022, it would amount to 100,000 Plastic Collection Credits purchase from the Plastic Bank. This results in 100 tons of plastic being collected and recycled. This makes it possible for ‘Product A’ to be certified as plastic neutral in 2022.“
Reduce plastic – Here's how you can join in!
How can everyone support Plastic Bank's mission from home to reduce plastic and contribute to a regenerative society?

What advice do you give to consumers who want to consume plastic more consciously?
