Four tips for finding the perfect name for your future baby
There are so many names that it’s hard to settle on just one. To a large extent, that’s because when it comes to your little adventurer, you naturally become more demanding—so even the names you liked before may now seem to have some flaw or not feel good enough for your child. With that in mind, we believe these four tips can help you in the search for a name for the baby you’re expecting. Above all, take your time. As we mentioned earlier, a name is for a lifetime.
1. Evaluate the pros and cons of common or trendy names: In Spain, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, Lucía has been the most common name among newborn girls since 2003, while Hugo has held the same status for boys since 2012. It’s true that both names are beautiful, but it’s also true that when you call your little one in a park, several children might respond, since the probability of encountering children with the same name is very high. Another case is names that become fashionable due to television series or famous figures (footballers, actors, etc.). A paradigmatic example was the one caused by the Game of Thrones saga, as suddenly Daenerys entered the list of names used with some frequency in Spain. The name may be attractive, but it is very likely that these girls will have to spell it out and repeat its pronunciation throughout their lives… Hence the importance of the initial advice to weigh the pros and cons.
2. Associate the first name with the last names, with people you know or with the siblings: In general, if your baby's first surname is long, it is advisable to choose a short name. On the other hand, if the surname is short, a longer name can be quite fitting. The idea is to find a perfect balance, and it can be very helpful to write down the possible names next to the surname and read them aloud to see how they sound together. In addition to pairing the name with the surnames, it can also help to associate that name with people you know (from your close circle, well-known faces on television…) who have that name. If those people are pleasant to you and you like them, it’s easier for the name to feel right, because you’ll associate it with positive feelings. Finally, if you have more children, it can also be helpful to connect your baby's name with that of their siblings—for example, all starting with the same letter or all having names of the same origin.
3. Find the meaning of the name: Are you undecided between two or three names for your little adventurer? One thing that can help you choose is the meaning. There are names with very attractive and poetic connotations. Lucas, for example, comes from the Greek "loukas": "the one who illuminates." Emma, on the other hand, was the eighth most popular girl’s name in Spain in 2020 and has Germanic roots. Its meaning is "Great," "Strong," and "Powerful." Knowing these types of connotations that accompany names can be very helpful when making your decision.
4. Use a name search engine: Name finders give you access to an extensive database of names, allowing you to play with a series of filters to more easily find the name you have in mind for your baby. At LILLYDOO, we have developed our own name finder. We present it to you below.
