When winter sets in, temperatures drop and snow appears. Sometimes it gets so cold that you eagerly await the arrival of spring. In this article, we share four tips for a worry-free winter with a baby—so you won’t even notice it passing!
1. Use a protective cream
In winter as in summer, your little adventurer’s skin needs your full attention. This is especially important when temperatures drop: a baby’s delicate skin can dry out and redden more easily. During this period, it’s recommended to use a care product with a high fat content to help preserve the skin’s hydrolipidic film. However, make sure the cream contains no perfume, additives, or harmful ingredients. Use an amount your child’s skin can easily absorb—usually a small hazelnut-sized dab is enough. You can also take it with you on outings if you feel your little one needs it.
2. Dress your child using the onion technique
To keep your baby warm in winter, it’s recommended to use the onion technique. Well known by our Scandinavian neighbors, this method involves dressing in layers, with the air between them providing an insulating effect. You can use it during the day as well as at night.
Also make sure to choose good materials—warm and cozy against the skin—such as wool or silk. Because they adapt to the body’s temperature and retain heat, these two materials are particularly suitable for cold days. Cotton is also a good alternative if you are vegan. In any case, favor natural materials over synthetic ones. Compared to adults, children usually wear an extra layer of clothing. However, check that your little one isn’t too hot; if they’re sweating, you can easily remove a layer.
3. Favor short-duration baths
Bath time is a real joy for most babies; splashing in the water can be great fun! However, they shouldn’t stay in too long, as skin cools quickly in winter. Use a gentle cleansing product suitable for the sensitive skin of little ones. For a newborn, you can also add a few drops of organic sweet almond oil to the bathwater. After the bath, gently pat the skin dry with a towel to avoid irritation. It’s best to give your little adventurer a bath in the evening, so they can quickly snuggle into bed. Two or three baths per week are more than enough; baths that are too frequent or too long could dry out your baby’s skin.
4. Protect your little one from the cold during your walks
An outdoor walk is always a good idea—invigorating and enjoyable. You should absolutely not deprive yourself of it, even when temperatures drop. In winter, prioritize outings during the warmest hours of the day, namely late morning and early afternoon. Make sure to protect your baby well from the cold, especially their extremities: feet, hands, nose, and ears get cold quickly. Therefore, a combination, balaclava, hat, mittens, and socks are essential.
Also consider adapting your stroller to the temperatures; use a warm, waterproof footmuff, which is ideal for retaining heat. You can also place a small hot water bottle in the footmuff so the stroller warms up more quickly. However, you should remove it before placing your little one inside to prevent burns! Finally, why not try babywearing? Close to your body, your child is better protected from the cold, warmed by your winter clothes, and benefits from your body heat.
With the cold kept at bay, nothing stands in the way of enjoying this lovely season—on the go as well as at home. We wish you and your little adventurer a wonderful wintertime.
