For many, it is THE first sign of pregnancy: morning nausea or vomiting. And not without reason. We wanted to understand exactly how pregnancy and nausea are connected, so we asked our LILLYDOO gynecologist Christian the five most important questions on this topic. Read his answers here and find out what you can do about it and why pregnancy nausea is often even a good sign!
Why do pregnant women often feel nauseous?
Especially in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, women repeatedly report severe nausea, which is often accompanied by vomiting. The symptoms frequently occur in the morning or late morning, but some women are affected at other times of the day. The reason for this is the pregnancy hormone "human chorionic gonadotropin", or hCG for short. In the first weeks after fertilization, its level steadily doubles. This hormone reflects the development of the pregnancy and is of great importance, but unfortunately, it also has this somewhat unpleasant side effect for many expectant mothers.
How long does the nausea last?
After about three months, the hCG level no longer continues to rise. Therefore, nausea usually also decreases during this period, along with vomiting. Sometimes women also report persistent nausea — but this is rather the exception.
Is morning sickness dangerous?
In general, morning sickness is not associated with any risks. On the contrary: it is usually a positive sign of the rapidly increasing hormone levels. Therefore, pregnant women typically do not need to worry about the health of their unborn baby or their own health, and they might even find some positivity in the nausea. A doctor's visit is only necessary if the pregnant woman repeatedly vomits and retains very little food. This can affect the metabolism and lead to increased fluid and electrolyte loss. In this case, hospitalization may also be necessary.
In particularly severe cases of morning sickness, it is referred to as " ". Hospitalization is often unavoidable in these cases. Fortunately, however, these are very rare.
