Your belly is now so round that you probably feel “really pregnant.” At the same time, this phase of pregnancy is usually calm and relaxed. Enjoy it to the fullest, rest as often as possible, and gather strength for the weeks ahead. Here’s what to expect during the 22nd week of pregnancy.
How Big Is Your Baby in Week 22?
At 22 weeks, your baby is about 18 centimeters long, roughly the size of a papaya. From crown to heel, your little explorer measures approximately 25.5 centimeters.
22nd Week of Pregnancy: Changes for You
Lower Abdomen and Discharge
Your lower abdomen is receiving increased blood flow in preparation for childbirth. This may cause a mild pulling sensation or slightly more discharge. As long as it’s white and odorless, there’s no need to worry. Discoloration or an unpleasant smell should be checked by your doctor to rule out infections.
Changes in Your Breasts
Your nipples are preparing for breastfeeding. Small bumps called Montgomery glands form around the areola, secreting a fatty fluid that nourishes and protects your nipples.
Pelvic Floor
Your uterus is now large enough to displace surrounding organs, increasing pressure on your pelvic floor—the network of muscles supporting your uterus and other organs. This added strain may cause occasional urinary leakage. During childbirth, the pelvic floor stretches significantly. After birth, targeted pelvic floor training is an important part of postpartum recovery. Before birth, gentle exercises can help make your pelvic floor more flexible and prepare it for labor. 22nd Week of Pregnancy: Baby Development
Movement and Senses
By week 22, your baby’s movements are strong enough to touch your abdominal wall. You may feel them for the first time this week, especially during hiccups or twitches, which now occur regularly. Babies are often most active when you are resting or lying down, giving them more freedom to move. Moving gently helps soothe your baby back to sleep.
Nails, Eyes, and Skin
Your baby’s fingernails are fully formed and will now only grow longer. After birth, nails are still soft, so trimming can wait a few weeks. Eyes and eyelids are fully developed, though iris pigmentation is not complete. Eyelids remain closed but are slightly transparent, allowing your baby to detect day and night and react to light.
Skin layers are fully formed, though still thin. Fat reserves will gradually build in the coming weeks. Growth in length slows slightly, while weight gain accelerates, giving your baby a more plump appearance. Wrinkles in the skin are still visible at this stage.

Magnesium Intake
Your baby’s magnesium needs are increasing. Symptoms of a deficiency may include leg cramps or uterine cramps. A magnesium-rich diet—including whole grains, fish, legumes, nuts, and vegetables—usually covers your needs. If cramps persist, consult your doctor about supplements.
Weight Gain and Appetite
A weight gain of about 250 grams per week is normal. You may also notice an increased appetite due to rising energy demands. Focus on nutrient-rich foods, though indulgences are fine too!
Handling Advice from Others
