Before your baby is born, many parents ask themselves: carry or push? Ultimately, this decision depends on your preferences, your baby's preferences, and your lifestyle. In this article, we take a closer look at the “push” option and summarize the advantages and disadvantages of a stroller for you. We also introduce the different models, and LILLYDOO midwife Sissi shares how you can find the right one for you.
What advantages does a stroller offer?
When your little explorer arrives, you’ll quickly notice: as a mom or dad, there’s always something to carry. ;) A stroller can be a huge relief, because besides the most valuable thing—your baby—you can also stow purchases , your diaper bag , and other essentials . If you already have an older child, depending on their age, they can ride comfortably in a sibling stroller or stand on a special board. A sheltered stroller also gives your baby an undisturbed place to sleep and, when awake, enough freedom to move and kick. It can also double as a practical changing area when you need to be quick.
What disadvantages can a stroller have?
No matter how practical it may be, a stroller can also have drawbacks in certain situations. For example, it can be obstructive on buses and trains, in narrow shops, or in large crowds. Depending on where you’re going and what obstacles you encounter, getting around with a stroller can be significantly slower than without one—for example, because you may need to find an elevator instead of taking the direct route via the stairs. The setup and dismantling when traveling or transporting it by car also takes effort. In addition, a high-quality, new stroller is a comparatively expensive purchase. And if you don’t want to carry the stroller into your apartment or down to the basement every time, finding a suitable parking space can become a real challenge, especially in the city.
What strollers are available?
-
Firstborn's stroller
The special feature of a first stroller is its completely flat lying surface, which allows newborns to lie comfortably without putting strain on their delicate spine. A sturdy carrycot, large wheels, and good suspension that absorbs shocks also ensure your baby is transported safely. Since a first stroller only has a carrycot, it can typically be used until your baby starts to sit.
-
Convertible stroller
The all-in-one stroller is the classic among stroller models. With a removable attachment, it is suitable for newborns as well as for toddlers who are discovering the world while sitting. Once your child can sit, you can easily swap the bassinet for a suitable seat unit—so the stroller practically grows with your child.
-
Buggy
Unlike a travel system stroller, a buggy is much lighter, more maneuverable, and easier to store and transport. Since your baby mostly sits upright in the buggy and it has less suspension than a first-year or travel system stroller, a buggy is recommended only from about six months of age. From simple, foldable seat buggies to adjustable lie-flat buggies, the selection is large and depends on your needs.
-
Jogger
If you’re physically active and want to include your child in your hobby, a lightweight jogger with three large, air-filled tires and good suspension is recommended for agility and stability. Not only for sports, but also if you often go off-road, a jogger may be the right choice. Since your child's spine should be stable before you actually start running with them, joggers are recommended from around 6 to 9 months of age. It’s best to seek detailed advice from a specialist store.
-
Multiple and sibling strollers
If you have multiples or several children with a small age gap, a suitable stroller will make everyday life easier. In addition to twin strollers for two or more babies in the lying or sitting stage, sibling strollers offer various combination options. Depending on the age of your explorers, you can combine a bassinet with a sports seat and, in some models, convert them flexibly—for example, when one of your children no longer relies on the stroller.
How do I find the right option for me and my baby?
In addition to the various models, there are also plenty of accessories available to equip the stroller of your choice. As you can see, the selection is extensive, and it’s not always easy to keep track. In the video, our midwife Sissi shares her personal tips on buying a stroller and explains what you should pay attention to.
How much does a stroller cost?
If you’ve already started your search, you’ve probably noticed: a stroller is one of the bigger purchases for your baby. Nevertheless, there are significant price differences between models, and ultimately it depends on your individual preferences and needs how much you want to spend on a stroller. Even though safety and the well-being of your little explorer should always come first, there are certainly high-quality models available on a smaller budget. A simple buggy is one of the most affordable options; you can buy a new one for around 50 euros. There are almost no limits at the upper end, so a new stroller can sometimes cost several thousand euros—but of course, this is more the exception than the rule. ;) A great alternative to buying new is purchasing a used model. This is not only more cost-effective, but also more sustainable. You can also rent a stroller or buggy for as long as you really need it. That way, depending on your child's age and your living situation, you’ll have the right stroller available without having to buy a new model each time.
