Does the busy life of young parents align with eco-responsibility? Yes—by adopting small gestures that benefit the planet. The arrival of a baby inevitably involves purchasing nursery equipment. Nowadays, more and more parents are choosing greener alternatives to reduce their impact on the planet. Adjustable furniture, sustainable materials, a minimalist approach, or even second-hand items are all tips for outfitting yourself sustainably.
For this article, we had a relaxed chat with Louise. She reflects on her first year as a mom and the eco-friendly choices she made to equip her little one and consume more sustainably.
Hi Louise, could you introduce yourself and tell us more about what motivates you at the beginning of 2022?
I am a personal development coach. In addition to the women-only retreats I host each month and my content creation, I perform on stage at the Trianon de Paris for the Bliss Stories show. I am also in the process of co-creating a maternity box for Mother's Day, to name just a few things... I don't get bored!
Becoming a mother, quite an adventure — how do you view your entry into parenthood, a year after your child's birth?
With a gentle and proud perspective—I believe we did quite well! I mainly look at the sublime human being that is my son (yes, we're fans), how he is growing, and I tell myself that he teaches me every day that the most important thing in life is: the present moment. Playing, laughing, cuddling, learning, loving. Children are our greatest spiritual teachers!
What eco-friendly consumption choices did you make when your son was born, especially in purchasing baby equipment?
For equipment, we prioritized durable, well-designed items. I specifically looked at whether it was adjustable so that we could keep it for several months , or even several years, and thus avoid constantly buying new items . For care, we opted for
The golden rule for eco-friendly consumption is to buy as little as possible by only purchasing what is essential. What were your essentials during the first year with your son?
Our stroller, in which our son still naps every day, and our baby carrier, which we used day and night during the first three months, are among our essentials. Just like his 4-in-1 bed, which functions as a cradle, baby bed, playpen, and travel cot during the child's first three years.
And for your own consumption, what actions have you adopted?
In general, I try to eat a plant-based diet as often as possible and shop at thrift stores, because the fashion industry and industrial farming are the second and third most polluting industries in the world!
What was your trigger that led you to adopt a more conscious lifestyle?
Clearly, becoming a mother, of course! I don't know a single mother who doesn't think about the climate and the environmental emergency today. I love this phrase: « We do not inherit the earth from our parents; we borrow it from our children. »
Thank you, Louise, for this conversation. We have one last small question: what is your perspective on your new life since you became a mother?
