Sports activities for your child

When to start and what to do at each age: everything you need to know

Children really love sports. They enjoy playing, running, jumping, and climbing: without even realizing it, children’s gymnastics becomes part of their daily routine. Even before they start crawling, they try to reach objects with real effort; then they learn to move on all fours and, finally, to run. They are practically always in motion, which is why they often show immediate enthusiasm when you offer them a sport. So what should you, as parents, do? Encourage their desire to move, of course!

A gymnasium also for the mind

Movement is essential for children; it’s a real need. By moving, children let off steam, challenge themselves to reach new goals, and (fortunately) get tired!

But not only: in the early years of life, a child’s physical development is closely linked to their mental development. Many skills that require cooperation between the brain and muscles are not innate; they need to be learned . With practice, little explorers train not only movement, but also reflexes and abilities that depend on the interaction between the brain and muscles (skills that aren’t innate and must be learned first).

With regular exercise, young children not only develop their motor skills but also reflexes and coordination . They also learn to judge speed and develop a sense of space and distance. In short, there are so many reasons to encourage them to play sports, right?

Which sports to choose for children?

Young children, of course, don’t need to take up specific sports, let alone follow strict rules. Ideally, let them do something that allows them to move freely, for example:

  • Outdoor games: In parks or classic playgrounds, you’ll find structures specifically designed for children’s gymnastics. The classic little playhouses with slides are often equipped with ladders, small bridges to cross, and mini climbing walls. Let them move freely, and if they tumble, don’t be frightened: it’s part of the rules of the game! Offer help only if they explicitly ask for it.

  • Playing with the ball: the ball is very useful for training coordination and can be used at all ages—starting, of course, by pushing it while sitting, then kicking it, throwing it, or anything else you like.

  • Gym workouts in the gym: Many gyms now offer children—usually from age 3 and up—the opportunity to participate in clases de gimnasia . It’s also a great chance to share the experience with other children.

  • Pool: Desde una edad muy temprana, los niños pueden asistir a cursos de familiarización con el agua con instructores experimentados. ¡Conviértete en un pequeño pez experto desde el principio!

  • And if you’re forced to stay at home? There are also sports to do at home . Create a cozy corner for your child, use a mat as a base, and place cushions on the sides to prevent bumps, giving them the chance to let off steam and jump as much as they want. You can also do small exercises together, such as playing a game where you touch the tips of your toes while sitting with your legs extended. Do you have space? The Pikler triangle will provide endless fun.

How to choose sports for children?

Usually, facilities offer the opportunity to take trial lessons. They’re a great way to see whether your little explorer welcomes the novelty with enthusiasm or rejects it, and to better understand their inclinations.

When should children start playing sports?

There is no universal rule: As mentioned, there are aquatic courses that even infants can take, and other sports that can only be practiced from a certain age onwards .

But when it comes to movement, age doesn’t matter: playing gymnastics in the garden can happen anytime!

The right shoe can make the difference

Often, the role of shoes is underestimated. The right shoes help your child move correctly and, as a result, won’t compromise the skeletal system (especially the back and hips).

To play sports or, more generally, be physically active, you should always choose shoes specifically designed to support your child’s movement. Similarly, it’s a good idea to choose cotton clothing that allows the skin to breathe and helps prevent unpleasant skin redness.

Even the diaper can make a difference: The right diaper must be reliable for sports and everyday activities; it shouldn’t shift while your little one runs, and it shouldn’t allow leaks. LILLYDOO Diapers are hypoallergenic and super absorbent; moreover, they are made of non-woven fabric (fragrance-free and lotion-free) that absorbs moisture and protects your baby from leaks.
