LILLYDOO and Plastic Bank against ocean pollution

Explore Plastic Bank’s mission and what it means to achieve plastic neutrality

Stop plastic before it reaches the ocean – that best describes the mission of Plastic Bank. The organization is committed to combating ocean pollution caused by plastic and has launched an innovative initiative to do just that. It considers both sustainability and social factors. LILLYDOO is also helping to reduce plastic in the sea in collaboration with the Plastic Bank Foundation: Our LILLYDOO green line is plastic-neutral. It is important to us to be transparent with you and to explain how we have achieved this. In this article, we therefore let Plastic Bank speak for itself: What are Plastic Bank’s goals? How does the organization work? And how does the collaboration with LILLYDOO work?

The mission behind Plastic Bank

How does Plastic Bank work? How do you support local communities on-site?

"Plastic Bank searches around the world for vulnerable coastal areas that currently lack infrastructure for collecting plastic. Additionally, Plastic Bank helps local entrepreneurs establish collection points at suitable locations, supports the formation of collection communities, and thereby prevents plastic from entering the ocean. For the collected plastic that is handed in at the collection points, the participating collectors receive a fair income. This, in turn, helps them earn a livelihood. Beyond that, Plastic Bank also offers additional, life-improving support. This includes, among other things, access to health, work, and life insurance, digital networking, and banking services."

How can consumers imagine the impact of the Plastic Bank Initiative?

"Thanks to Plastic Bank and its partners, 2.5 billion plastic bottles have already been prevented from reaching the ocean. If you're interested in more current figures, you can find all the information here: .

But it’s not only the positive effects on the environment that drive Plastic Bank. Members of the collection community also benefit from exchanging the collected plastic for life-improving services. These include, for example, food, heating oil for cooking, health insurance, or internet access.

How does Plastic Bank decide which regions to support?

Currently, we are active in Brazil, Indonesia, Egypt, and the Philippines. Plastic Bank is primarily involved in countries heavily affected by plastic pollution and poverty. In most of these countries, there is a lack of adequate waste disposal infrastructure. Additionally, these regions are often dependent on single-use packaging that keeps everyday products clean and sterile. All of this leads to a disproportionately high level of plastic pollution.

Why is recycling especially important in coastal regions?

"By collaborating with communities in coastal regions, Plastic Bank is able to establish collection points within a 50-kilometer radius of the ocean or along waterways bordering the ocean. At these locations, we have the greatest impact on reducing plastic in the sea. Because if we want to effectively rid the oceans of trash, we must first ensure that no new waste is generated – the tap must be turned off, so to speak. For this reason, Plastic Bank primarily focuses on collecting and recycling plastic in coastal areas before it even reaches the sea."

What happens to the collected plastic? How does a "plastic circular economy" work?

"The collected plastic is recycled and processed into a new raw material called SocialPlastic®. Manufacturers can purchase it and use it to produce more environmentally friendly and socially responsible products. In this way, the process supports a sustainable circular economy for plastic. If you want to learn more about the circular economy for recycled plastic, check out the Plastic Bank " " page."

LILLYDOO's collaboration with Plastic Bank

Marine pollution is one of the biggest problems of our time – and we at LILLYDOO are aware of this, too. That is why we have decided to collaborate with Plastic Bank and take action together. We offset the entire plastic footprint of LILLYDOO green diapers, pants, and wipes. In total, we collect from the environment the full amount of plastic that we use to produce our products.

The LILLYDOO green products are plastic neutral. What does that mean?

"Plastic neutrality simply describes a compensated plastic footprint. A product – or even an entire product line – can achieve plastic neutrality when the manufacturing company participates in the Plastic Bank's so-called" Plastic Collection Credits acquired. These credits must correspond to the amount of plastic used in the products and their packaging during a specific period.

If a company, for example, uses 100 tons of plastic in the packaging of 'Product A' in the year 2022, it would need to purchase 100,000 Plastic Collection Credits from Plastic Bank. This results in 100 tons of plastic being collected and recycled. This makes it possible for ‘Product A’ to be certified as plastic neutral in 2022.“

Foire aux questions

How much plastic is in the ocean?

An estimated 12.7 million tons of plastic make their way into the oceans each year. About 8 million polluted plastic pieces end up in the sea every day. According to experts, the North Pacific is the most affected by pollution, closely followed by the Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic.

How does plastic get into the ocean?

Plastic mainly enters the oceans from land. The plastic waste is, for example, washed into the sea via rivers or washed up on the beach from landfills. In poorer coastal regions, there is a lack of suitable infrastructure for waste collection, so plastic waste is often stored directly near the sea.

Which organization is responsible for pollution in the sea?

As an organization against plastic in the ocean, Plastic Bank helps prevent plastic waste in the world's oceans. By establishing infrastructure for plastic collection in coastal regions, the organization not only works to free the oceans from plastic but also aims to improve the living conditions of the project participants. Collectors of plastic, for example, receive food, insurance, or internet access.
