The right time to massage your baby
When you hold your baby in your arms, stroke them, and cuddle them, that tender affection could already be considered a form of baby massage. If you want to do a full massage, your child should be at least eight weeks old. Before then, only partial massages—such as the feet—are recommended. The ideal time for a baby massage varies from baby to baby. In general, your baby shouldn’t be hungry during the massage, but at least half an hour should have passed since their last meal.
A massage is only half as enjoyable with a full tummy! Your little darling should also be awake and receptive. Especially during the first few sessions, a mindful massage is an exciting experience for your baby. Some children become more active, while others get very sleepy—making it a wonderful bedtime ritual. It’s important to choose a similar time of day each time so your baby can get used to it. You’ll quickly notice which time works best for your baby.
These utensils are needed for the baby massage
To make the massage more enjoyable for you and your baby, you’ll need—besides a content and alert baby—a few drops of baby oil without fragrances or preservatives, for example. If you want to massage your baby unclothed, have everything ready that you’ll also need after changing: something to clean your child if necessary, fresh baby clothes, and a clean diaper. In addition, a cozy surface—for example, a large towel or a blanket—and a comfortable room temperature are important so your baby doesn’t get too cold, even when naked.

Here's how: Baby massage made easy
You don’t need to attend a special course to massage your baby. If you want to make baby massage a regular ritual in your daily routine, it helps to follow a simple sequence while stroking. A consistent routine gives your baby a sense of security.
Here is a guide for a simple baby massage:
Warm a few drops of baby oil in your palms and gently place your hands on your baby’s tummy and shoulders for a minute to show them that the massage is about to begin.
Start with the soles of the feet: circle around each toe and stimulate the soles by applying gentle pressure with your thumb.
Gently knead the legs, moving from the calves up to the thighs.
Massage your baby’s belly and chest with a flat hand. Be sure to make circular motions on the belly only clockwise to support digestion.
Next, use kneading motions to work along both arms at the same time, and then move down to the hands.
Gently press and make circular motions on your baby’s palms, then softly stroke each finger.
Finally, place your hands on your child’s belly and shoulders again for one minute as a sign that the massage is now finished.
Such a massage can last up to 15 minutes, but a shorter time is perfectly fine too. The most important thing is that you and your baby feel comfortable. If you notice your child squirming or crying, it’s best to postpone the massage to another time. Some children also don’t like being massaged on certain parts of their body—something you’ll quickly learn. If you enjoy singing, you can also look online or in baby books for sweet children’s songs that work well during baby massage. That way, your hand can become a funny crawling beetle, and your thumb can stomp like an elephant in rhythm.
